One of the biggest events of the year will start today in Cloncurry.
After missing out in 2020, the Cloncurry Stockmans Challenge is bringing hundreds of horsemen and women to the Equestrian Centre for five days of action this year starting Tuesday, July 13.
The committee have a massive week planned with a record breaking $120,000 of prizemoney across the Challenge and Campdraft events and over 2000 nominations for the week.
There will be several challenges during the week.
The Cloncurry Stockman's Classic Challenge is for horses that have not turned five years old by the start of the event while the open challenge is open to all horses and riders.
There is also a Derby Challenge restricted to horses that are five years of age with classic horses ineligible.
Finally there is an encouragement challenge restricted to riders and horses who have never won a Stockman's Challenge event.
The new 'Ron Wall Memorial Derby Challenge' will commemorate great North Queensland horseman Ron Wall who died last year.
The Derby Challenge is restricted to five-year old horses, giving them a unique opportunity to compete in their own class.
With a prize pool of $15,000 up for grabs and a first place prize of $8,000, it's sure to be a major draw card for this year's event
Events kick off at noon Tuesday with the Vet Check U5 Challenge and there is also a Derby Challenge Dry.
Wednesday sees a U5 challenge dry and encouragement challenge dry with the Derby Challenge Wet and Open Challenge Wet.
Thursday will see finals in Novice A as well as a restricted open draft.
There will be a big day of finals on Friday and Saturday with the grand parade scheduled noon Saturday.
There will also be a rodeo from 7.30pm Saturday.
Sunday concludes the event with a Ladies Draft, Novice B final and a gymkhana.
