Telstra Regional General Manager Rachel Cliffe said the proposed projects included the construction of mobile base stations, satellite small cells and battery backup solutions, and would vastly improve Telstra's existing 4G mobile coverage in the region.
"Cloncurry, Flinders, Carpentaria and McKinlay shires will benefit from these projects that will provide improved connectivity for residents, farmers and tourists, and will be particularly important during natural disaster events like floods," Ms Cliffe said.
Minister for Regional Communications Senator Bridget McKenzie said the $60 million North Queensland Telecommunications and Energy Improvement Grants enabled businesses to grow and break into new markets.
Telstra recently announced it would invest a further $75 million to further enhance connectivity in regional Australia based on recommendations from the Regional Telecommunications Independent Review Committee and Ms Cliffe said that once the fifth round of the Federal Government's Mobile Black Spot Program had been completed, Telstra will have invested around $300 million to improve coverage for regional areas.
