Ms Scanlon, who is well qualified in her role being just 28 years old, was chairing a session on Tuesday designed to provide young people a chance to speak face-to-face with her about local issues important to them.
There were also community leaders including Mount Isa mayor Danielle Slade in attendance.
Ms Scanlon said young people in the session talked about housing affordability and access to health and mental health services including bulk-billed services, which they told her were not available in Mount Isa.
"Access to specialised health services is an issue we hear about more in regional Queensland," Ms Scanlon said.
"Some issues are more affordable access to GPs but others are maybe changing the way we look at services so they are a little more discreet."
Ms Scanlon said she gained insight into the mining culture of Mount Isa and jobs on offer here.
"People understand the unique parts of Mount Isa in a way other parts of Queensland necessarily have," she said.
Other issues included increasing engagement in the community through events such as the Street Festival or Multicultural Festival, or by having a Youth Hub, and a community bus to improve transport options for young people.
Community representatives discussed opportunities and services available to young people.
Ms Scanlon said department officers would write up a brief the results of the sessions across Queensland, including Mount Isa and share with other portfolios who deal with young people's issues.
