The locals enjoying the Thomson River - kids splashing in the shallows or being towed behind a speedboat, a couple of hopeful fishermen, and hawks circling in the air currents - couldn't believe their eyes last Sunday when two racing eights stroked down the long reach of the outback river in front of them.
