The seat has been held by Bob Katter since 1993 gaining a 1.2pc swing when re-elected a 10th time in 2019 ahead of the LNP's Frank Beveridge who dropped 5pc on their 2016 result.
Mr Katter will be running again in 2022 and Labor has announced its candidate as Mount Isa mining industry professional Jason Brandon.
Speaking in Mount Isa last week federal agriculture minister David Littleproud said the LNP expected to name its candidate by the end of November.

"There will be a candidate in Kennedy and probably by the end of the month that candidate will be named," Mr Littleproud said.
"Nominations will close and we'll try and get someone in the field, but that's why I'm up here, we're taking Kennedy seriously and the reality is we are the only ones in Kennedy that own the chequebooks, we're the ones inside the room, that's why you are seeing $17 million dropped into Kennedy via the Better Regions program, probably the highest amount of any electorate in the country."
The latest round of Better Regions funding has given $9.7m for a new RFDS base in Mount Isa, $5m into a Cloncurry housing development and $506,900 for Mount Isa's 100 Years celebrations.
The election must be called by May 21, 2022.
