Teachers, parents and guests also gathered for the ceremony which highlighted the Year of Youth.
Father Mick Lowcock said it was important for young people to let their light shine.
“This year is the Year of Youth and it’s more important than ever to nurture the physical, spiritual and mental well-being of our young people,” Father Mick said.
At the conclusion of the opening mass principal Peter Scott addressed the student body and guests.
Mr Scott said the opening mass represented a new beginning and the appointing of new leaders.
“Leadership is about serving others and it is crucial to choose great leaders,” Mr Scott said.
“Great leaders respond not only to themselves but also to others, wielding responsibility and genuineness.”
Mr Scott told the congregation to value youth for who they are not for what they will become.
Mr Scott and Father Mick inducted the year 12 leaders and presented them with badges.
