Superb pitching by Rebels’ Matt Hovi saw his side get home in the Mount Isa Softball Association match on Saturday.
Dylan Parker was also outstanding on third base for Rebels, as were female fill-ins Ash Stanley and Fiona Bryant.
Solid play from Pirates Bart Walden, Brenton Ah Kit, Kelvin Dempsey and Josh Rankine wasn’t enough to get their side over the line.
In the other men’s A-grade match, Wanderers won the battle of the pitchers 7-3 against Red Devils.
The tightly fought contest that went to time could have gone either way, if not for the play of Wanderers pitcher Ryan Smith.
Clutch hitting from Joel Naughton, Chris Dredge and Jason Wellington and excellent fielding from Matt Croghan at shortstop secured the victory.
Jayson Morgan starred for the Devils and was well supported by Phil Horne at catcher.
Solid play by Devils trio Stewie Beetham, Josh Wagner and Jarred Morgan was kick-started by Ian Downes in the ground home run.
In the women’s league, entertainment was aplenty as Wanderers A continued their winning streak by beating Rebels Blue 15-4.
Pitcher Amanda Bishop proved the difference for Wanderers, restricting Rebels hits all match.
Nikki Byrne, Andy Bellamy and Gracie Ryder all contributed to the scoreboard for the Wanderers, while rookie Sarah Brisbane continues to improve each week.
Rebels quartet Sarah Svenson, Kartia Ball, Sonya Reid and Margie McDonald worked tirelessly all day in their team’s losing effort.
Big hits from Red Devils Mellissa Horne, Jodie Lee King and Lyndin Smith-Francis were the difference in their team’s handy 17-6 win against Wanderers Gold.
Contributions from Brenda Henricks, Hazel Martin and Katelin Hovi in the field proved invaluable for Red Devils.
Marette Schulz kept Wanderers Gold in the match with her sensational pitching and Teresa Knight’s excellent reflect catch was the moment of the match.
Leanne Rumbalu, Oli Quirk and Lucy Lillicrap played strong all day for the Wanderers Gold and never gave up.
A 12-run second innings proved the difference for Pirates in the 21-8 victory over Wanderers Blue in the women’s softball.
Wanderers never recovered after the strong hitting from Pirates’ Zoey Rankine, Taelah Nardoo, Melissa Nathan and Patricia Richards early on.
Vicki Thompson made her long-awaited return to the diamond for the first time in seasons and contributed strongly for her Wanderers side.
Jo Mackenzie, Cass Dredge, Cassie Lloyd and Sue Tromp also had handy games for Wanderers.
In the final women’s match, Rebels White got the points in a gripping encounter against Wanderers White 13-8.
Bec Nanikivell’s pitching was the difference for Rebels, consistently hitting the corners of the plate for strikes.
Batting by Kartia Ball, Cianne Denyer and Fiona Bryant helped capitalise on Nanikivell’s pitching, while Ash Stanley had the hit of the day, clearing the Rebels bench as she crossed home plate for her home run.
Kristina Staines provided the highlight of the match for Wanderers, taking a remarkable catch on third base, with Jennifer Hamlett, Linda Walmsley and Zhoe Stephenson also doing well in the field.
There was no game for the men’s A reserve, as the Rebels had difficulty fielding a team.
Pirates won on forfeit.
