EIGHT runs in the third innings proved the difference when Wanderers edged out Rebels 15-7 in Mount Isa’s A Grade men’s softball.

Pitcher Ryan Smith was again consistent with the ball but also chipped in with the bat, smashing the ball past the outfield for a home run.
Wanderers trio Karl Lloyd, Chris Dredge and Korey McGee contributed across the board while Matt Croghan and Clynton Munns’ combination at short-stop and first base continues to improve.
Rebels were led by pitcher Yael Ladsila, Darryl Parker, Jesse Parker, Chris Tyson and Matt Hovi, who recorded six outs in two innings.
In the other A Grade men’s match at the Mount Isa softball diamonds, Red Devils defeated Pirates 4-0, after telling contributions from Phil Horne, Jayson Morgan, Luke Pollard and Jim Worth.
Chris Beetham starred in his return after a couple of weeks’ lay-off for the victors.
Pirates Lenny and Jaymon King, David Heggarty and Tristan Saltmere were strong on the day but couldn’t inspire their side to victory.
Kieran Punch and Bart Walden showed plenty of heart and stamina by backing up for the Pirates after two earlier matches.
Rebels White and Blue had a tightly contested match in the open women’s, with the Whites narrowly winning 16-11, through four innings.
A spectacular catch from Lilian Stewart helped secure the win for White, as teammates Cianne Denyer, Tiffaney Waddell Wood, Terri Edwards and Linda Thompson also chipped in.
Rebels Blue were led by Tamara Stevens, Claire Emmerson, Jo Svenson and Alison Hagan.
Rebels Red proved too strong for Wanderers Blue (9-3), as Rebels pitcher Cheryl Gallagher continually keeps the batters guessing while on the plate.
Tiffany Waddell-Wood, Gerry Timonen, Kristie Munns and Helen Burns all played well in the field for the Rebels, who are shaping as the team to beat going into finals, having only lost twice all season.
Wanderers’ Sue Tromp was reliable as always on the home plate, with Judy Lloyd, Sharnee Lloyd, Jen Hamlet and Cass Dredge all providing contributions with the bat.
Red Devils went into their match-up against Pirates undermanned and it showed, going down 16-2, thanks to solid hitting and fielding from Trish Richards.
Richards was supported by Krystle Chong, Rachel Thorne, Tamara Raymond and Virginia Medwin.
Michelle Ridge had a field day on third for Red Devils, with some excellent pickups and throws, as Mellissa Horne, Brenda Henricks, Hazel Martin and Kim Smith played well.
In the late game Wanderers A defeated their compatriots Wanderers Gold 18-4, as Jaimie Bargenquast proved the difference at pitcher.
Catcher Lisa Parker was outstandingly, as was Gracie Ryder, Angela Baker Leanne Bellamy, and Amanda Bishop.
Wanderers Gold was led by Kim Pointer, Zhoe Stephenson, Oli Quirk, Angela Bentley and Leanne Rumbalu (first base). In the A Reserve men, nothing could split Wanderers and Rebels as the sides played out a 15 all draw.
Pitching opponents Korey McGee (Wanderers) and Kim Timonen (Rebels) set the tone early, only allowing three runs each in the first innings.
Wanderers jumped out to an 11-4 lead after an eight run second innings, led by power hitting from Bart Walden, Kieran Punch and Dick Kostowski.
Rebels fought back in the third with seven runs from trio Jeff Biffen, Sam Irachi and Nathan Denyer.
A brilliant play from Miguel Kato (Rebels) prevented Wanderers’ Clynton Munns from scoring the winning runs deep in the fourth innings.
