IF anyone paid an entry admission fee for Saturday’s Mount Isa AFL grand final at Legend Oval then they were treated to a glorious sight of passionate fans and footy on display. Most notable were the hundreds of Lake Nash Young Guns fans swarming in from different communities both in and out of town just to watch their loved ones play a game of football. Tigerland was beaming with its yellow and black colours but they were undeniably outnumbered by the blue, red, and white colours of the Northern Territory-based team. Not that it made a difference in the end with Tigers comfortably getting their second premiership in as many years.

CONSIDERING Friday’s is a usual day off, I made a rare visit to the women’s soccer preliminary finals and I have to say it was completely worth it. The quality of football in the main game between Isaroos and Parkside was a great representation for the sport. A special mention must be made to the two spectacular strikes on goal from Isaroos midfielder Amanda Winterburn and Parkside’s Emma Jordinson. Winterburn struck a 35-yard ‘worldie’ while Jordinson looped a free kick in from 25 yards out. If this is a showcase of things to come for the rest of the final series then I implore all to get down and support the local women’s competition.
MOUNT Isa Rugby Union Association former Euros player and Charters Towers resident Ted Vinson has taken out the 2015 Community Coach of the Year award at the Australian Rugby Union annual awards and gala day in Sydney last week. Congratulations Ted!
APART from the AFL, it was a week for the underdog teams in Mount Isa particularly in the soccer. Parkside women’s were undefeated all season until the Isaroos changed that completely with a 3-1 upset win on Friday night. On Saturday, cellar dwellers Concordia A ended International A’s season in the men’s A grade with a comprehensive 4-1 win. In the final game on Saturday evening, Parkside A put a dent in Atlas A’s premiership hopes with an unexpected 3-1 win over the minor premiers, who also were unbeaten in the league this season. In the Mount Isa Pool Association, the Club Hustlers also snapped up the undefeated streak of the Irish Club 303s in the second last round of the regular season.
HATS off must be shown the team at the Mount Isa Hockey Association for putting on a vibrant, colour finals day for its junior players. Competitive and enjoyable hockey was evidently on show and what caught the eye especially were each club’s tailored tunnel for players to run out through before their respective games started. It’s obvious a lot of work is put in to making these days as successful as they are. Not to mention the free steak sandwiches barbeque those were mouth-watering to say the least.
FORMER Cloncurry junior rugby league player Kierran Moseley was a member of the victorious Gold Coast Titans team that defeated the St George Illawarra Dragons last Sunday by a narrow two points. Moseley came off the bench making an impressive 24 tackles with an 89% success rate. The utility hooker also made four runs with the ball covering 38 metres.
