Of course he should be used to bigger crowds from when he toured with and opened for Taylor Swift.
Those who came for those mellow Sunday drive songs were in for a bit of a surprise - Vance Joy sang hard and loud.
His music had an energy to it and while his voice suffered at the extremes of his range, it made for a lively and almost fiery performance from the Fire and the flood singer.
He started his show with Mess is mine and it seemed as though he was singing a country version of his own song as the music strayed from folky to a more bluegrass feel.
Vance Joy keeps that feeling of the humble performer who just made it big, talking about how he still gets his family's approval for songs.
He knows how to connect with his audience and his show is designed to help with that connection, with the lights almost entirely focused on him for the whole gig.
There are stories from his past, of him growing up and of him being a bit of a dag, and the crowds love it because he feels like one of them.
Vance Joy brought out all of the favourites for his show and while the middle of the show was a little tame he picked it up with a lively cover.
Paul Simon's Call me Al was ripped out on stage and showed the crowd just how good a performer Vance Joy can be.
There were times throughout the show where you were left feeling more passionate expression could have really got the crowd going, but nearly the entire Riverstage crowd were on their feet and singing along anyway.
