As always with the bigger meets the fashions on the field will be on full display.
Loft 23 boutique owner Gayle Martin said the fashion trends this Spring suitable for the race track played to pattern and the clashing of several colours.
“Look for bell sleeves, in your face lace dresses, the cold shoulder dress, sexy shoulders out, off the shoulder dresses, different hemlines, tassels and fringing,” she said.
She said accessories were necessary to complete the outfit.
“Crowns and headbands are a good option if a fascinator is not for you.
“For something different; a boater hat, funky fedora or wide brimmed hat will add an edgy look to any outfit.”
Mount Isa Race Club committee member and local horse trainer Jay Morris said he was pleased with the number of horse nominations for the day considering it was being held three days after Cloncurry’s Derby Day.
This meant trainers, jockeys and their horses would likely compete in both events.
“The majority of races have nine or 10 in them. Nine local jockeys are supporting the meet,” Morris said. “We’re hoping it’s a big day.”
250 people had booked to attend the event as of Wednesday night, Morris said.
The last race meet on October 15 was two weeks after the new committee was formed, and in previous years this meet had low numbers, and yet about 300 were in attendance.
The Melbourne Cup Day will also have a fashions on the field, bookmakers and TAB facilities, and a DJ performing afterwards. The general admission is $20.
Another local event for Melbourne Cup day is the buffet luncheon at the Buffs Club, held between 11.30am to 2.30pm.
There are prizes for lucky door and for best dressed lady and gent, and a free sweep ticket for diners.
There are 10 races scheduled during the Melbourne Cup Day.
The seventh scheduled for the day is the race that stops the nation.
The Emirates Melbourne Cup has 29 horses on the list of racing nominations on Thursday afternoon.
The Sydney Morning Herald reports that up to 10 overseas trained horses contend for the racing list.
Prominent horse trainer Gai Waterhouse predicts the winner will have been trained by an Australian.
Closer to home, there were 47 nominations among the five local races.
The 1200 metre Subzero Class B Handicap has 12 nominations, and six of those belong to horses trained by Tanya Parry.
