The 23-year-old was last seen about 7pm on Sunday, when emergency services were called to Nobbys following reports a wave knocked two men into the water.
One man was able to cling to rocks, allowing rescuers to reach him, but they were unable to locate Mr Awan at the time.
“Police located a body, believed to be that of the missing man, 1km off Newcastle Beach,” police said in a statement.
“At this stage the man has not been formally identified.”
A report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.
Hopes had faded late on Monday, as the search officially moved from a rescue operation towards retrieval.
But friends of Mr Awan, who had been in the Hunter about six months studying, had refused to give up hope he would be found.
