Lucky Luke’s legal identity is Joseph Luke Dargan, who identifies with numerous Indigenous cultures including the Waanyi, Mitakoodi and Kalkadoon.
He submitted his song ‘Jacks’ as his Unearthed entry. It is a song set in Pioneer and is about overcoming the suburb’s social issues including overcrowding, drinking, and drugs. “It’s like a cautionary tale of who to talk to and not to talk to. But at the same time it doesn’t matter where you come from. Just rise from the slums,” he said.
Dargan’s stage name was inspired by his grandmother, Annie Davis (nee Cummins), who was named after the namesake of the Lady Annie copper mine in the north west minerals province. Dargan had been born on the fluke combination of Friday the 13th and on Good Friday.
“My grandmother sent a telegram saying my parents didn’t have to be superstitious anymore. Because I was born on black Friday and on Good Friday at the same time.”
Dargan used to hate it when his cousins Matthew Parker and Eddie Dargan rapped at their social gatherings. But in 2015 he joined in and found he loved it. “It was the rush of putting a sentence together,” he said.
One Night Stand is to be held at Tony White Oval on Saturday, April 22.
A Triple J spokesperson said that Dargan had been on the radio station’s radar for several years and that with every upload he has made to Triple J he’s “upped his game.”
