Senior Constable Steph Hancock was in uniform at Cloncurry’s rugby league carnival on Saturday but it wasn’t hard to believe she would have preferred to be out on the field.

Hancock works out of Crestmead station in Brisbane but in rugby league she is one of the best in the business, for East Tigers, Queensland and for the Australian Jillaroos since 2003, captaining them since 2014.
“Unfortunately I missed the Anzac test match in Canberra due to injury but the girls got a win which is good,” Hancock said.
Hancock is the daughter of Rohan Hancock who played for the Kangaroos in the 1979 and 1980 and was also a member of Queensland’s first ever State of Origin side in 1981.
Despite the pedigree, getting to the top was hard work.
“You’ve got to commit yourself, at this level you’ve got programs, diets, everything the boys have, we have – except the money,” she said.
Hancock said she was retiring this year but hopes to stay in the game in some capacity.
