Many of them had recommended he enter the competition held Saturday night by tagging him to online stories and Rish Nightclub announcements about the male modelling competition.
There were only three contestants that braved the catwalk, which works out well for them considering the prize offered for the top three was a free trip to Cairns.
They would compete in the almost week long national Manhunt round from late August.
Mr Maher said he was nervous and scared before he went on stage for the first time.
“I wanted to make sure I smiled, and not have a blank face and look uncomfortable,” Mr Maher said.
“The people that were there made it feel so much smoother, and I got that support.”
With the evening wear he wore a sky blue jacket, white shirt, and brown chinos. With the swimwear Mr Maher began with a purple and white sarong which soon revealed the pink and white budgie smugglers underneath.
Mr Maher was unsure what to expect from the national final. “I am not sure what we’re going into. I am definitely keen for the experience as I did with the one I just did,” he said.
It should be declared for the sake of transparency that this reporter came second, and is eligible to compete at nationals.
Mr Maher said that the shortage of contestants made the night more enjoyable and less competitive for the three competing.
