The council was one of three local projects in our RDA region to share in more than $14 million under the new Building Better Regions Fund.
The new recreational lake in Hughenden will cover 219ha and include four recreational areas to allow rowing, fishing and water skiing.
The lake will provide better facilities for locals and also be another tourism drawcard for the region – more tourists will visit and stay longer in the area.
We all know many regions are struggling with high unemployment rates, particularly youth unemployment.
So these large projects are a step in the right direction in providing new short and long term jobs, and a much needed economic boost to northern and western Queensland.
I would also like to congratulate the Richmond Early Education Centre for also securing BBRF funding of $139,000 for the installation of a new safe and functional children’s playground and outdoor facilities.
RDA continues to play a lead role in promoting and supporting Australian Government programs, such as BBRF, by providing workshops across the regions, advice on developing strong applications, as well as providing applicants with one on one advice and letters of support.
The Australian Government is expected to open another round of BBRF before the end of the year. I encourage councils and not-for-profit organisations to start the process now of identifying projects that they believe would benefit their communities.

Just get on with it
May I, as an old, straight, ex-army, white guy, point out that our stupid government wants to waste $140 million on a pointless plebiscite.
A pointless, expensive, hateful, non-binding plebiscite.
When I got married ( ended in divorce by the way) I didn't ask for approval from anyone.
Why on Earth should same sex couples need approval from anyone else?
Just get on with it.

Labor needs to guarantee future of sporting shooters
There are many reasons why law-abiding firearm owners would be suspicious of the Palaszczuk Labor Government.
Sporting shooters have raised concerns with me Labor is about to clamp down on shooting clubs, with fears almost 80% of Queensland clubs could be forced to close.
Labor needs to guarantee the current laws on approved pistol clubs and other sport and recreation shooting clubs across regional Queensland won’t be changed.
We have already said that we won’t be dictated to by Canberra, and that we will be standing up for law-abiding firearm owners who do the right thing.
Labor’s Police Minister Mark Ryan needs to be up-front with law-abiding firearm owners and guarantee that there will be no changes to the current rules around clubs.
Labor should be focusing their attention on criminals, illegal manufacturing and organised crime which is ramping up again under their soft new bikie laws.
We will be fighting against any proposed changes because there has been no consultation and no justification.
