The Remote and Indigenous Hockey Program at the hockey grounds brought together seven schools from Mount Isa and one from Doomadgee for a day of learning and playing on the field.
Tyler Hardy, physical education teacher at St Josephs and convenor of the hockey in schools carnival for the Mount Isa Sports School Association said the schools played a round robin tournament to see who comes out best.
“Because we’ve got eight teams and we’ve only got one day, everyone plays everyone once and we have the finals in the afternoon,” Mr Hardy said.
Mr Hardy said the competition brought a mix of experience on the day.
“Some kids have played hockey before, some haven’t,” he said.
“Most of our inter-schools carnival are heavily modified so we try and get kids who haven’t played before into it so they can get a taste for it.”
Mr Tyler said about 90 kids turned up for the day.
“It’s one of those sports that kids know about but probably haven’t played before,” he said.
And at the end of the day it was Barkly Highway State School who came away as the 2017 Primary Schools Hockey Champions.
RIHP development officer Hope Philip said it was a fantastic way to finish the hockey year with so many smiling and happy faces.
“Thank you to MISSA (Mount Isa Sport Schools Association), the teachers, coaches, umpires, canteen volunteers, photographer, groundsman (Josh and Blake) who marked the fields and most importantly all the kids,” Ms Philip said.
“In two years this type of gala day has grown from five schools to eight schools. Thank you to everyone who has helped the Remote & Indigenous Hockey Program deliver hockey throughout the schools this year. I don’t think anyone can believe what we have achieved in two years. Bring on 2018 and more kids playing hockey.”
