Five teams faced off in a fierce, fast-paced round robin tournament; last year’s victors, Mount Isa Fiji, Warrigals, Keas, Cloncurry, and Euros.
Seven 14 minute games preceded the semi-final, starting at 6pm with a big win for Euros against Warrigals, scoring 26-7.
At 6.20pm Keas faced off with Fiji, resulting in the same score of 26-7 – putting Euros and Keas at the top of the tournament.
In game three at 6.40pm Euros came out on top again, beating Cloncurry by 13 points with a score of 27-14.
Warrigals clambered back up the table with a convincing win against Keas, 31-10.
Half-way through the night, some speedy footwork from Cloncurry players saw them beat Fiji 5-19.
Four more matches preceded the semi-finals, where Cloncurry eventually took an exciting victory over Keas for third place, taking home $400 and a couple of serious injuries.
The grand final saw the top two teams face off in an epic battle; Euros versus Warrigals, red versus orange.
At full time the score was an even 10-10, so they went for the golden point; playing two 2-minute halves of extra time where the first team to score a try or get a kick over the goal posts wins the game.
In the last half of the final play with seconds on the clock, Euros scored a try with no conversion, taking their score to 15-10 and winning them first prize of $1000 after a close grand final match.
MIRU president, Kurt McGregor, was pleased with the turn-out from both spectators and players.
“It’s good to get the crowd down, sevens is fast-paced so it’s a lot more entertaining, and good to have an event like this coming back from Christmas to get everyone into the spirit of things,” McGregor said.
Special thanks was given to Mark and Linda Bellamy of Linmar Cranes and Haulage, for generously sponsoring the sevens tournament.
“Without your generous sponsorship, we would not have the prizes tonight, thank you so much for coming in at late notice,” McGregor said.
