Tylan John Graham, 20, had a severely swollen jaw and cuts to his face in the dock of Albury Local Court this week.
He received the injuries after a red Holden Commodore he was driving allegedly crossed lanes on Wagga Road on Tuesday morning and smashed into a truck.
Graham, who is a disqualified driver, was arrested at the scene before being taken to hospital.
He had injuries to his face and body and appeared bloodied.
An ambulance spokesman said there were concerns he had a broken jaw.
Police are awaiting the results of blood test to determine if drugs or alcohol were involved.
It followed an incident in Wodonga in November where he jumped from a moving car while high on ice, which resulted in his release from jail on January 7.
Wodonga court heard he was mourning the death of his relative, Shaun Crighton, who crashed a stolen car into a tree in East Street in September.
A witness to Tuesday morning’s crash said he had heard an extremely loud bang during the collision, which occurred about 5am.
The Isuzu truck driver, 60, appeared to have been shaken by the ordeal, the witness said.
The crash occurred south of Thurgoona Drive.
Graham was charged with negligent driving – not causing death or grievous bodily harm – after being questioned by police after his hospital release.
Police had refused him bail, noting “only luck prevented serious injury or even death to other road users”.
Court registrar Wendy Howard said she believed no bail conditions could minimise the risk to the community and risk of re-offending.
He was already on strict bail with nearly “every condition we can impose”, she said.
He is still awaiting sentence for an incident involving a stolen Mitsubishi Lancer, which was taken during a home invasion on Waugh Road, last August.
Graham got into the car near the Albury Police Station about 3.40pm on October 17 as police watched on.
He pulled out in front of a car and ran a red light.
He was arrested on August 26, hiding in a house after an alleged pursuit.
The 20-year-old will return to court on Monday.
