The brutal attack by a high school girl on another girl, believed to be in Year 7, was filmed on a mobile phone and then reportedly uploaded and details shared on Facebook groups and Messenger.
Several concerned parents and students also contacted the Bega District News to alert media of the attack, and a copy of the video has been forwarded to police.
In the video, other students can be seen doing little to stop the girl as she throws the victim into a brick wall then punches and kicks her as she lies curled up on the ground.
Bega Police report a 13-year-old girl has been charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and intimidation. She was given conditional bail and will appear in Bega Children’s Court in July.
A Department of Education spokesperson, on behalf of the school, said “Bega High and other NSW public schools do not accept violence, bullying or other forms of inappropriate behaviour”.
“They are dealt with strongly through the school’s discipline code.
“When such behaviour may have broken a law, the incident is reported to police and the school cooperates with their investigations and any action they consider appropriate.
“Students who are subject to inappropriate behaviour are fully supported.”
The spokesperson said “the school responded immediately and appropriately to yesterday’s incident”.
The backlash to the incident has also been fierce as those who have seen the video – which seems to quite a few – are “disgusted” and “sickened” by what happened, calling for further action by police and the school, not just for the attacker, but also for those who filmed it or stood by and watched.
“Their parents should be ashamed,” one post reads.
