Leichhardt Services Bowls club hosts big tournament

Leichhardt Services Club saw one of the biggest bowls events hosted in Mount Isa in recent years on the weekend and a quite lucrative one too.

Rod Jolly, past president of the Leichhardt Services Bowls Club, said it was their invitational hat draw triples tournament.

“We have 42 players with locals and visitors from out of town who are travelling through,” Mr Jolly said.

“We've got three or four thousand dollars in prize money plus two days of bowls and meals, everything is laid on at the club and we’ve got a Calcutta tonight (Saturday, July 7).

Mr Jolly said he thanked everyone for coming along and making the weekend a success.

“We’ve got a heap of sponsors and I’d like to thank them all,” he said.

The format of the event was a knockout with the winners judged as the best overall score of the tournament.

“The prizes will run down first, second and third and there will be a few medley things going on too,” Mr Jolly said.

“The numbers we are getting at this tournament is the most we’ve seen this year and it’s hard to get them.”

He said visitors came from many centres including as far afield as Victoria and New South Wales as well as the Queensland coast and the south east corner.

“One bloke was up here last with his wife and they put their name down to play again, and they brought their mates and another one brought their mates as well,” he said.

“We are more than happy for them to come. All in all it turns out to be a great thing.”

Mr Jolly said the Club was doing well in the regional competitions and had also just their team into the Blue Pennant final.

“They are going to play up in Cloncurry first week in September against Cairns and Townsville,” he said.

“So our boys are really firing up.”
