Andrew Frank Clement was last seen boarding a ferry at Wisemans Ferry before parking near a well-established walk at Mill Creek on a Sunday morning in May 2017.
State Coroner Les Mabbutt on Monday said the 60-year-old strata manager must have walked off the main track to have gone unnoticed when something went wrong.
But the coroner couldn't make a finding as to what happened next to cause his death.
He told Glebe Coroners Court that Mr Clement, a New Zealand citizen who'd lived in Sydney for decades, may have suffered a medical episode, fallen, injured himself or become disoriented and lost.
