Bushfire season is upon us and many of our rural firefighters have already fought blazes right across the state.

Most of Queensland is facing a high or very high fire danger rating.
It is important that we thank both professional and volunteer firefighters for putting their lives on the line to keep us all safe.
While they protect our communities, there is plenty the rest of us can do make their task easier and safer.
The first is being vigilant and taking extra care when using fire in high risk areas. Put simply – keep using that common-sense and know-how Queenslanders are famed for.
The second is slowing down when you see flashing lights or when you see any emergency services on the side of the road.
Many fires attended by brigades occur on roadsides, often in high-speed areas.
Fighting a bushfire is dangerous work and when combined with the added hazard of fast-moving traffic it can be lethal.
I encourage everyone to please slow down when you see flashing lights or when you see any emergency services on the side of the road.
Please take care for your own sake and for the sake of our dedicated firies.

Walk in the park in Healy Heights
I wont get involved in replying in detail to the nasty letter (North West Star, Tuesday August 28) signed by Ronald McCullough.
But I don’t like allegations that I am not telling the truth to go without a reply.
For the record at the April 2013 Ordinary Meeting of the Mount Isa City Council I moved “That the Mount Isa City Council re-name the Healy Heights Park to The Ron McCullough Park”.
That motion was carried and is in the records of the Mount Isa City Council so despite what Mr McCullough stated in his recent letter to the North West Star once again this man is factually wrong like so many of his other statements which appear in his letters to the Editor.

Labor has an affordable Energy Plan
The Palaszczuk Government knows Queenslanders are concerned about the cost of living.
That’s why we have our Affordable Energy Plan in place, already putting downward pressure on power bills.
From 1 July, regional prices reduced by 1.3 per cent.
Under the LNP, electricity prices rose by 43 per cent.
They just don’t seem to understand. Under their proposed regional electricity policies (Letters, North West Star, August 21) regional households would see bills increase by more than $400.
Under Labor, North West Star readers will be seeing $50 off their power bill this quarter, and again next year, and we guarantee that electricity prices will not rise above inflation for two years.
