Child Protection Week is held during the first full week of September. It is a week focusing attention on child protection as everyone’s business and encourages communities to take responsibility for children being protected and experiencing well-being. One of the main objectives is to raise the profile of issues with child protection, including child abuse prevention, treatment, research, education, service provision and support for children, young people and families.

When dealing with children it is important to remember child protection is everyone’s business. The responsibility lies with adults in keeping children safe from harm. All people need to play a part in ensuring children are nurtured and safe.
Listening to children and young people is the number 1 indicator in assisting their safety and well-being. Mean or cruel words harm children and young people.
Being ignored, going hungry and feeling and/or being treated as invisible harms children and young people. Seeing or directly experiencing domestic and family violence harms children and young people.
Being physically, verbally, sexually or emotionally abused harms children and young people. Not having health, educational and other developmental needs met harms children and young people. Not being heard when they speak about abuse or trauma harms children and young people.
The Queensland Health Statewide Child Protection Clinical Partnership’s theme is “Keep the child in mind: Every health contact is an opportunity to support a family and protect a child” and their catchphrase is “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star – Have you asked how the children are”.
At the North West Health and Hospital Service clinicians are aware adult worries and adversities can impact their children and we routinely enquire about the wellbeing of children and young people in our clients’ care. We want to nurture stronger families to protect children and use every health contact as an opportunity to support a family by promoting early intervention and referrals to support services when required. So if you are an adult accessing our service, we want to know how your whole family is and how we can best support you to support the children in your care.
The NWHHS’s Child Protection Unit would like to recognise the talented and beautiful children of North West Queensland by showcasing their artistic talents in the Hospital foyer this week.
Staff, visitors and patients will be entertained with pop-up performances by dancers, musicians and artists in the Mount Isa Hospital foyer Monday September 3 – Thursday September 6.
