It’s very disappointing that Labor is already looking to smother crucial discussions about the bushfires.
We share the huge concerns of many Queenslanders about land management policies and our national parks.
We know that many of these fires started and spread in state-controlled land including national parks.
If Annastacia Palaszczuk believes this is a discussion about climate change, then that needs to be part of a review to ensure land management policies and practices are suitable.
The Labor Government also needs to come forward and explain why they failed to implement a single recommendation from the Queensland Auditor-General’s 2015 Bushfire prevention and preparedness report.
This isn’t about blame.
This is about getting our bushfire management policies right so lives are saved and communities are protected.
The inquiry needs to be in public and we need to hear from every stakeholder, particularly landholders and communities in regional Queensland.
We are a fire-prone state and many people live in fire-prone areas.
We need a government with a clear and effective plan moving forward.
Climate change can’t be used as an excuse to do nothing.
If anything at all, climate change means that we should be adapting our response more.
Deb Frecklington
Leader of the Opposition

Response to North West Star call for candidates to support the air inquiry
I think the delaying of the inquiry is another indicator of how the dysfunctional Morrison LNP government has major issues organising themselves, let alone an inquiry into the lack of respect, service and ripping off that the Mount Isa community is be inflicted upon it by the major airlines.
It's hard living in regional Queensland.
We have been ignored at the federal level due to our poor representation for the last 25 years and that has to change.
Price gouging is just another way to drive home the isolation that Mount Isa feels compared to the rest of Australia.
We are the power house of the Australian economy and deserve better.
I say bring on the federal election, sort out the rubbish in Canberra, get the inquiry moving and give Mount Isa the respect it deserves and the services on par with the rest of Australia.
We need a fresh start.
Brett McGuire
Labor candidate for Kennedy
Editor’s Note: the North West Star called on all candidates in the next federal election to support the continuation of the inquiry past the next election. Mr McGuire was the first to respond. We will publish all other responses as we get them.

Re Cloncurry councillors donating their payrise to community groups.
Necia Shonhan Wow, this is definitely a council that cares about their town/community!! Great job guys and Merry Christmas!!
Re CuDeco claiming they will re-open their Rocklands operation in January
Mick Tully It is appalling that this company can get away with actions that it has shown to suppliers in the past. It is about time that the Government steps in and has an inquest into there Corporate failure and responsibilities.
