We are now in the middle of what is traditionally the hottest part of the year – and it’s a time of year in Mount Isa that can create a few challenges and frazzled nerves as we struggle to cope with these seemingly never-ending searing temperatures, day in and day out.
There’s a reason why it’s called the “silly season”, after all.
I urge everyone to bear with it, and hopefully we’ll get lots of soaking rain very soon that’ll fill up Lake Moondarra, cool the temperatures right down and have the countryside looking lush and green again.
It’s also a very busy time for parents and school children who are getting ready to go back to school for another year.
Many different sporting bodies and organisations are also getting ready to start up again for the new year, as families and others return following their Christmas or summer school holiday break, and are busy planning, preparing for and organising their activities, games and competitions.
Our Sign-On Expo is perfect for every local community and sporting organisation, club and group.
It’ll be held indoors in the air conditioned comfort of the Buchanan Park Entertainment Centre on Saturday, February 2 from 9am to 1pm, and it’s the ideal place for locals to find out everything they need to know about Mount Isa groups and clubs.
They can also sign up to take part in any of the huge range of activities – both sporting and community-focused – that are on offer throughout the year.
Before that, though, we’ve got our Australia Day festivities and activities – and this year is looking to be even bigger and better than ever.
We have really changed the festivities up this year. We’ll start off with an awards ceremony and morning tea at the Civic Centre from 9am, then at 4pm we’ll have a pool party at Splashez – it’ will also be the official reopening of Splashez, following renovation and upgrade work last year.
There’ll be music, games, a sausage sizzle and Australia Day cake, and the day will be capped off with a dive-in movie at about 7.30pm.
I look forward to seeing you all there!
