Antonio 'Tony' Salaris was found on the footpath on Browning St at Kilsyth at 9am on Wednesday, lying at the front gate of a home.
The 73-year-old died at the scene.
"At this stage we don't know why Tony has been killed and we are working to piece together what has happened in the lead up to him being stabbed," Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Tim Day said in a statement on Thursday.
"This is a quiet residential area, so if anyone has seen anything unusual then we'd like to hear from you. This could be a person or vehicle that is not usually in the street."
Mr Salaris had been home alone at the time of the murder. The unknown man fled the scene and neighbours contacted police.
Police said at this stage there is nothing to indicate the murderer knew Mr Salaris.
Homicide detectives initially combed a nearby oval for the weapon but they were unsuccessful.
Detectives are continuing to canvas the area for footage, and want residents with CCTV or dash-cam footage from the area at the time to come forward.
