Gracie Belle O'Malley pleaded guilty in Mount Isa Magistrates Court on August 26 charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, failing to comply with duties of driver involved in a crash and driving a motor vehicle between the 11pm and 5am without certificate exemption.
The court heard the series of events of July 14 at 3am when police observed a vehicle traveling along Camooweal Street, Mount Isa before it failed to stop on medium strip and crashed into another vehicle. O'Malley then left the scene before providing details to the vehicle owner.
"O'Malley returned to her address and tried to contact the owner of the vehicle who she knew through school but couldn't get in contact with her," police prosecution said.
"Police obtained a breath specimen, returning a reading of 0.142."
O'Malley's Legal Aid representative said O'Malley wasn't purchasing her own drinks and didn't know their strength.
"Her license has been suspended since July 14 and she has no prior drink driving offences," she said.
Magistrate Trinity McGarvie said O'Malley was facing serious traffic offences.
"Given your previous history and future responsibilities, I accept this behaviour is out of character," Magistrate McGarvie said.
"This was a significant reading and then aggravated by driving away from the scene of an accident.
"I will impose a penalty today, and fines are within range."
O'Malley was fined $1050, disqualified license for six months and conviction recorded.
