The initiative called Operation Bounce Back will begin this month and will run for about three months, with a 30-second, "Mission: Impossible"-themed commercial that will be broadcast on Southern Cross Seven Central, as well as on the big screen at Cinema Mount Isa during that period.

Operation Bounce Back is a joint initiative of the National Motor Vehicle Theft Reduction Council and Mount Isa City Council.

The commercial shows a man not paying attention while his keys are stolen from inside his house, in a scene that's reminiscent of the scene in "Mission: Impossible" featuring Tom Cruise.

It ends with the message, "Stolen keys result in 70% of late model car thefts", before pointing people to the website www.carsecuritybeginsathome.com

"Anyone who's had their car stolen or broken into knows how stressful, costly and inconvenient the whole experience is, and this campaign is a reminder that there are things we can do to reduce that risk as much as possible," Council Community Development Officer Petra Osinski said.

Mount Isa Police Senior Sergeant Sean Wade said most home burglaries are opportunistic, so this campaign was a great way to remind people that they can take very simple steps to improve the security of their home and possessions, including always keeping their keys out of view and away from external doors and windows; installing motion-activated external security lighting; keeping doors and windows locked; and having working alarm systems.
