Despite a winter-long shutdown by Diamantina Shire Council saying they have closed to the end of the year, the Birdsville Race committee said it remained hopeful it could proceed as planned on September 4 and 5, 2020.
"We are following, and will continue to monitor, all COVID-19 developments and we will of course take advice from Government and Queensland Health Authorities over the coming months," the committee said in a statement.
"The only change to plans for the Races at this stage is that the tickets on-sale that was scheduled for April 2 will be delayed."

Organisers said maintaining the safety and health of patrons who are passionate supporters of the event, and that of the community and townships on the routes in to Birdsville, would remain their number one priority.
