Keith's son and fellow jockey Dan Ballard said the fall happened before one of the races.
"Dad had a buster before the fourth race at Longreach yesterday and he was flown to Rocky last night (Sunday)," Dan Ballard said.
"He has a nasty laceration behind his right knee, which is going to require surgery, a fractured femur and a small bleed on the brain, but we're very thankful that he's in one piece."
Dan Ballard said the family had been "completely overwhelmed" by people reaching out to ask how he's doing, send their regards, and offer to give a hand in any way they can.
"We're very fortunate to have so many wonderful friends, and we're eternally grateful for your support," he said.
The incident is the 65-year-old Keith's worst fall since 2017 when he broke his jaw in several places after the horse he was to ride in Winton headbutted his face.
Ballard junior noted the Longreach meet was a day of contrasts.
"Dad was taken to the hospital while I had one of my most successful days in the saddle with five winners," he said.
"I was lucky to have a book of very good rides and I'm very thankful to the connections for putting me on."
