In Victoria, police callouts for family incidents rise 15.11 per cent on AFL grand final day and 11.56 per cent on NRL grand final day.

The figures are even starker in NSW, with a 27.91 per cent increase on the day of Sydney's rugby league decider and 16.28 per cent for the AFL's showpiece clash.

A decade of Tasmanian Police data also shows family arguments/family violence incidents are 35 per cent higher for the AFL grand final than other days.

It is feared more victims could be at risk this year, particularly in locked down Melbourne, where people will have to watch Saturday's Richmond-Geelong decider from home with no visiting friends or family.

"This a really dangerous time for anyone that's living with family abuse, domestic violence or intimate partner abuse in the home situation," No to Violence chief executive Jacqui Watt said on Tuesday.

"We know that because the number of calls to our services rise and there are more incidents reported to the police over these weekends.

"(That's) right across Australia but particularly in Victoria and NSW where those numbers seem to really peak just around and after the grand finals in each state."

The AFL and NRL grand finals are usually spaced a weekend apart, but COVID-19 shutdowns have meant the two codes' finales line up on Saturday and Sunday respectively.

With that in mind, Australia's leading domestic violence services have joined forces to launch the "Play our Part" campaign in a bid to reduce and ultimately prevent such acts.

The campaigners gathered at Melbourne's Etihad Stadium on Tuesday to highlight how Australia could fill the stands of some of the nation's biggest sports venues every year with family violence victims.

"Each year, over 300,000 people experience family violence, and the devastating reality is that this number of people would struggle to fit in the empty seats of these stadiums," Ms Watt said.

"This is why it's important to raise awareness of supports available for people to reach out to if they are experiencing or using violence, wherever they are in Australia."

Our Watch chief executive Patty Kinnersly says there is no excuse for violence and it's up to everyone to do something in the face of disrespect towards women.

"We know from the research that family and domestic violence is not caused by the disappointment of your team losing, a few too many beers or the stress of a tense match," she said.

"Although these factors may exacerbate the violence, it is driven by gender inequality and the perpetrator's need for power and control over their victim."
