At stumps on day one Tasmania were 0-6 in response to WA's 302 at Adelaide's Gladys Elphick Park.
While much of the attention was on new Australian selection Cameron Green (7), it was a man 16 years his senior who ended up with most plaudits for the day.
In deep trouble at 5-64 and then 8-189, Marsh formed valuable stands with Josh Inglis (51) and Cameron Gannon (58) as his side scraped towards a competitive total.
Marsh was eventually out bowled by Peter Siddle for 115, his 30th first-class century featuring 13 fours and 2 sixes.
Tasmania had dominated for much of the day with Jackson Bird the early destroyer.
Largely forgotten in the Australian set-up after last playing a Test in 2017, Bird (3-47) captured the first three wickets including that of Green, caught by Ben McDermott at third slip.
In better news for the 21-year-old allrounder, he's expected to bowl for WA during the match after back issues had prevented him from taking the ball over the last year.
The wickets continued to flow for Tasmania and when Siddle had Inglis playing across the line and caught at second slip, even 200 looked some distance away.
But Marsh dropped anchor to ensure his side would have a decent total to defend.
The 37-year-old was hopeful that the WA bowlers would find something in the deck on Saturday after most of his side's batsmen had struggled on day one - himself included.
"It's always nice to score a hundred," Marsh said.
"I had to grind my way through that innings today and I never felt like I was in out there so it was nice to get the rewards at the end of the day."
Nathan Ellis also had a good day with the ball, finishing with 4-76 from 17.1 overs.
Charlie Wakim (6) and Jordan Silk (0) were the unbeaten batsmen at stumps for the Tigers.
