A Mount Isa man has been charged following an investigation into the use of counterfeit currency in the local area.

It will be alleged that at approximately 8.30pm on October 31, the offender has attended a business on Camooweal Street and exchanged counterfeit notes for legitimate Australian Currency.
At about 9pm on the same date, they have then attended a licensed venue and attempted to exchange counterfeit currency for legitimate Australian Currency, the venue staff have reported the incident to police.
On November 3, police executed a search warrant at a dwelling on Walton Avenue where they allegedly uncovered a sum of counterfeit currency.
A 29-year-old Mount Isa man was charged with one count of fraud, one count of attempted fraud, two counts of utter counterfeit currency and one count of possessing currency and will appear in Mount Isa Magistrates Court on November 25.
Mount Isa District Police would like to remind business owners and employees to be vigilant when handling cash and to get in the habit of assessing notes during the transaction as counterfeit notes have no value therefore you will not be reimbursed.
It is an offence to knowingly possess counterfeit banknotes.
There is a range of security features on each note that will help you identify if it is counterfeit. You can find these on the Reserve bank of Australia website.
If you come across a banknote that you suspect is counterfeit, take the following steps:
Step 1: Store safely - handle the suspect banknote as little as possible and store it in an envelope.
Step 2: Take note of details - note any relevant information, such as how it came into your possession.
Step 3: Report to police - report the matter immediately to state or federal police
