Police conducted high visibility roadside breath testing throughout the recent Christmas school holiday period and the long weekend aimed at preventing and disrupting drink driving offences being committed on the roads throughout the region.
Over a two-month period 5566 road-side breath tests were conducted throughout the region, including Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Normanton and Doomadgee. with 106 drivers found to be over the legal limit, roughly one in every 50 drivers.
Police are reminding the community that drink driving is one of the Fatal Five traffic offences, which also includes speeding, fatigued driving, not wearing seatbelts and distracted driving.
"Consuming alcohol prior to driving reduces your ability to drive safely and affects your judgement, reflexes and vision," Mount Isa police said.
"If you intend to consume alcohol, arrange for a 'sober bob' to drive, to stay at friend's house or catch a taxi home."
Police also reminded drivers they can still be over the limit in the morning after a big night.
