Police said that at 11am on Thursday, July 22, a 73-year-old man was sitting in the front yard of his Webb Street home when he heard noises inside his dwelling.
The man entered his bedroom and saw a boy near the end of the bed.
The boy allegedly removed a sheathed hunting knife from the victim's drawer and then used it to demand money from the victim.
Police said there was an altercation and they both fell to the floor causing a laceration to the head and significant back injury to the victim.
The victim was transported to hospital for assessment, where it was discovered he had two breaks in his back.
The boy was observed on CCTV and was arrested in Maxine Street a short time later.
A 17-year-old boy has been charged with armed robbery, grievous bodily harm, serious assault and enter dwelling with intent.
He is due to appear at the Mount Isa Childrens Court at a later date.
Detective Acting Senior Sergeant Anthony Moynihan said CCTV from residents proved critical in being able to identify the boy.
"This is a great example of how police and the community work together to solve crime using CCTV footage," he said.
"It is a great resource for us and also enhances the safety of our community.
"We encourage anyone with CCTV, to visit their local police station for more information on how to register."
