The socially conservative but economically nationalist party holds three seats in state parliament and has been a fixture of Queensland politics for 10 years.

KAP leader Robbie Katter says the Hinchinbrook MP was appointed to the new role by the the party's federal management committee last week.

"We are very excited that Nick has accepted the role of deputy leader, and what this additional structure will mean for our party strategically," Mr Katter said in a statement on Tuesday.

"Given the events of the last two years, Australians have had a real wake-up call.

"Growing discontent and a lack of faith in the two-party system has seen a decline in support for Labor and Liberal, and the KAP, through its modernisation strategy, is striving to be a solid alternative for those looking for a party which represents their genuine interests."

The KAP holds three state seats in Queensland's north, with its smallest margin a comfortable 14.8 per cent in Mr Dametto's seat after the 2020 election.

Shane Knuth holds the seat of Hill for the KAP with a margin of 22.5 per cent, while Mr Katter holds Traeger with 24.7 per cent margin.

The party garnered 72,168 votes in the October poll with KAP enjoying a statewide swing of 2.52 per cent.

Mr Dametto said the announcement was part of the KAP's strategic development and "cemented its place as third force in Queensland politics".

"This strategic direction means that when our Leader, Robbie Katter, is in remote areas of his Traeger electorate or is unavailable I can step in, make decisions, and provide direction for the entire KAP team," Mr Dametto said.

"With this announcement comes great responsibility, being trusted to make these kinds of decision in the absence of our Leader is a task I will not take lightly."

Bob Katter, the KAP patriarch, currently holds the federal seat of Kennedy in north Queensland.
