Coinciding with the release on Monday of the latest international climate report, scientists say they plan to hit universities worldwide with strikes and occupations.

Scientist Rebellion says it will then target scientific and governmental institutions on Wednesday in more than 25 countries, and has warned its planned actions could involve the risk of arrest.

"This decade is the most important in human history," Scientist Rebellion tweeted.

"What is the role of scientists and academics on a planet in crisis?"

Limiting global warming to 1.5C is "effectively impossible" under current government plans, according to climate scientist Rose Abramoff.

"We need to both understand the consequences of our inaction as well as limit fossil fuel emissions as much and as quickly as possible," she said.

Previous protests include action and arrests of scientists at last year's climate talks in Glasgow.

Scientist Rebellion's demands include training on the "climate emergency, energy crisis and civilisational collapse" to become part of all university degrees.

The campaign slogan is "1.5 degrees is dead, climate revolution now".
