Police announce $1 million reward in 1998 murder cold case

Twenty five years later, police are offering a $1 million reward for information on the home invasion and murder of 53-year-old Denise Govendir.

"Police are as committed as ever to finding answers for Denise's family and friends, and we hope this reward helps bring forward new information," NSW police minister Yasmin Catley said.

"If you know something, there is now one million more reasons to get in touch with police," she said.

Police arrived at Ms Govendir's Dover Heights home she shared with a 55-year-old man at 2am on March 10, 1998 to find the aftermath of the alleged home invasion.

The 55-year-old male resident said an unknown man had broken into their home and had claimed to be a police officer.

He said the alleged assailant knocked him unconscious and restrained him with cable ties before allegedly killing Ms Govendir with blunt force trauma to the head.

The male resident called police after he regained consciousness and found the man had fled in Ms Govendir's white 1997 Ford laser sedan.

Detectives discovered Ms Govendir's allegedly stolen car 11 days later almost two kilometres from her home in Rose Bay.

A coronial inquest was held between 2005 and 2008 confirming Ms Govendir died from injuries intentionally inflicted by a person or multiple people.

No one has been charged in relation to her death.

"This reward gives us an opportunity to appeal to those who may not have spoken to police - or provided them the whole story - all those years ago," Detective Superintendent Danny Doherty said.
