Celebrations kicked off on early Sunday, with some in major cities staking out good spots hours ahead of midnight fireworks displays.
In the country's regions and suburbs, locals gathered in parks, reserves, clubs and pubs to ring in 2024 with friends and family.
Sydney's famous New Year's Eve fireworks attracted thousands of revellers as 36,000 shooting effects burst into the night sky.
Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the 2023 celebrations included a special nod to the 50th anniversary of the Sydney Opera House.
"Every year we try to do something bigger and better than the year before and I think as we kick off 2024, many of us will agree this was a truly spellbinding night that will hopefully kick off a safe, peaceful year ahead," she said.
"The fireworks, projections, music and live performances told the story, not just of our remarkable city but also of our remarkable people, as the city showcased an exciting, inclusive and inspirational event."
