Actually we cheat ever so slightly by starting with the rodeo on New Year’s Eve. Mount Isa Rodeo Series hosted the event in conjunction with their Rodeo Services Australia finals. This saw competitors battle it out for double points in 12 open and four junior categories in timed and rough stock events. The Saddle Bronc was taken out by Tom Webster while the Open Bull Ride was claimed by Jack Keats of Cloncurry.
The rugby resumed after the Christmas break with the Mount Isa Linmar Rugby Sevens. Five teams faced off in a fierce, fast-paced round robin tournament; last year’s victors, Mount Isa Fiji, Warrigals, Keas, Cloncurry, and Euros. The grand final saw the top two teams face off in an epic battle; Euros versus Warrigals with Euros winning 15-10 in extra time.
In January it was announced the IsaRATS would host competitors from across the state when the club hosts the inaugural Mount Isa Triathlon Festival on the weekend of February 17-18. The weekend of action will include the annual Mount Isa City Council Corporate Triathlon on Saturday afternoon.
Local allrounder Sarah Pizzey smashed Stack City Fitness’ ‘Push/Pull’ powerlifting event, where she won four trophies.
Copper Frank Lawler took out the Mount Isa Senior Sportsperson of the Year award at the Mount Isa City Council Australia Day celebrations for his coaching of Indigenous soccer teams. Martial artist Gyan Caampued took out the Junior Sports award.
The Mount Isa Sign On Expo was a popular attraction at the start of February with hundreds of people through the doors Civic Centre for this year’s Expo, rebadged from the Super Sports Expo looking at the dozens of options to join up with sporting clubs.
New Zealand outlasted the Aussies in an entertaining Waitangi international game at Mount Isa Rugby Grounds by 41 points to 27.
The Mount Isa Amateur Netball Association elected a new committee for 2018. The Association moves from strength to strength with 500 members and a successful Waitangi day tournament.
Mount Isa’s first Triathlon Festival at the end of February was a success. There was a junior triathlon on Saturday morning at Splashez with 18 competitors, then in the afternoon 32 teams competed in the Mount Isa Corporate Triathlon and Sunday saw 40 competitors in the first race in the Race to the Creek Series.
With parkrun already established in Cloncurry in 2017, it was announced Mount Isa would join the fun with its first parkrun scheduled for the Easter weekend.
