The Mount Isa Mines employee has been growing an impressive mane for the last four years, but will shave the whole lot off on March 24.
Her boldest haircut yet is part of ‘World’s Greatest Shave’ run by Leukaemia Foundation.
Ms Chin said losing her hair was an easy decision, after two of her family members were lost to blood cancer.
“My uncle and one of my aunts has passed away from acute myeloid leukaemia, and different family members have done shave for a cure throughout the years,” Ms Chin said.
The charitable act doesn’t only help the Leukaemia Foundation, as Ms Chin says she plans to give her ponytail to Wigs For Kids before shaving the rest.
“About a year and a half ago I realised my hair was pretty long and thought about chopping it off.
“Then I thought, well why not wait and do something for a good cause?
Two causes will soon benefit, and Ms Chin has even inspired workmate Chelsea McKavanagh to donate her own ponytail.
With a fundraising target of $4000, Ms Chin is appealing to the community of Mount Isa to help her get there.
And if she succeeds her partner will add another $1000 – if she also gives him charge of the clippers.
“So he wants to shave my head,” Ms Chin laughed.
“He’s doing it because he thinks it’s going to be hilarious and I’m going to look ridiculous.
There doesn’t seem to be much vanity though, and her family’s example makes the drastic look a little easier.
“Over the years my mum’s done the shave twice, and I’ve had three cousins who’ve done it too,” Ms Chin said.
Blood cancer is the third most common cause of cancer death in Australia, claiming more lives than breast cancer or melanoma.
Around 35 new people are diagnosed with blood cancer every day.
Ms Chin has put up posters around the mine sites to gain support for her shave, as well as promoting it on Facebook and holding a fundraising barbecue.
