In June, Mount Isa Irish Dance Association and Dean Studio (MIIDA DEAN) took a group of students, between 5 and 18 years old, to the North Queensland Championships.
Across two days, the 12 dancers competed against dancers from Cairns, Townsville, Brisbane, Gladstone, and Mackay.
Solo dances are usually choreographed by the dancers’ teachers, in this case Erin Dean of MIIDA DEAN.
“There are traditional dances such as St Patrick’s Day and Blackbird, but all of their solos are choreographed by their teachers,” Ms Dean said.
“Or the kids might get up and do a reel, and the school owns that reel.”
Ms Dean said the students competed strongly, bringing many trophies, certificates, medals and sashes home to Mount Isa.
Six dancers also represented the Mount Isa region at the Queensland State Premierships in August.
Mount Isa dancers Madeleine Osinski (9), Kate Dean (9), Kelsey Bawden (12), Tianna Percy (12), and Tracey Tait (15) all received Championship Awards.
Ms Dean thanked their parents in a proud Facebook post.
“A big shout to our mums and fundraising committee, for helping to get these kids here!” she said.
