With the sport of boxing seeing a resurgence in the Isa, no doubt helped by the previous ‘Battle in the Outback’ fight nights, names of boxers wanting to take part are increasing with each event.
Fighters from as far afield as Cairns, Alice Springs, Cloncurry and Barcaldine have been getting in touch with event Promoter Scott Crawford in the hope of getting a fight.
This year, due to requests from coaches, Crawford has lined up a couple of junior bouts on the card. Crawford said the boys were excited about having their first bout in their hometown in front of family and friends.
This will be the start of an action packed night with possibly eleven or twelve senior bouts on the card.
Promoters said while match ups are still to be decided a few new faces could, and probably would, cause some upsets on the night.
Some of the past fighters returning from previous battles are Paul Tavener, Clayton Sharpe and Corey Thorpe.
Crawford also said for the first time the ‘Battle in the Outback 3’ will be hosting a female bout.
Tia Albert from the Golden Oaks Club will be taking on Leah Mason from Cairns.
Both camps are confident of a win as well as predicting one of the best bouts on the card.
Also returning to the Isa is Les Sherrington, former WBF World Champion, WBO Asia Pacific Champion and a host of other titles.
As a past student of Kalkadoon High Les said it feels like coming home in many ways as it was here he first laced up the gloves. No doubt he will also be visiting gyms around town on the Friday.
While here he will, the same as last time, meet and mentor a number of Mount Isa youth on healthy living. As well he will be giving a few tips to the junior fighters plus a light sparring session with them. One can only imagine a young boy or girl from the Isa being able to tell family and mates they sparred with a former World Champion.
Battle in the Outback 3 is on Saturday, May 12 from 5pm.
