Competitors from Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Normanton and as far away as Winton arrived early to prepare for the events.

President Mark Thompson said the MIRS runs six events a year with their final major event held at Buchanen Park in October.

"We work in with all the other Rodeo's around the north west, like Normanton, Boulia, Camooweal, Julia Creek and Cloncurry," Thompson said.

"Mount Isa Rodeo is included too. Anyone who is a member of this club and competes and wins is eligible to score points throughout the season, which tally up at the end of the year for the finals."

The weekend time trial events included junior and women's barrel racing, breakaway, team roping, steer wrestling, calf roping and potty and steer rides.

MIRS also held a workshop for the younger competitors on Saturday, the Kenny's Rodeo School.

Rodeo royalty Shane Kenny travelled with his family from Emerald to teach the 50 keen competitors some tips and tricks.

Kenny has won 35 Australian Professional Rodeo Association titles.

The school focused on roping styles in a controlled environment before the students used their new skills to rope a calf.

"We'd like to thank Shane, Leanne and Ellysa for coming all the way to Mount Isa to teach us some rodeo tips and tricks," Thompson said.

In other events, MIRS, will hold a workshop in May 25-26 with champion bull rider Jason Mara who is ranked 51 in the world and has been competing professionally for 12 years.

Mara grew up in Cloncurry and will teach students confidence with themselves and with stock.

"He will be giving the young ones tips when riding bulls, he will be coming to Mount Isa," he said.
