Organised by the Queensland Minerals and Energy Academy, students from Spinifex State College, Good Shepherd Catholic College and Cloncurry State School are learning some practical trade skills and are finding out pathways into trade careers.
Mentors from Glencore's Mount Isa Mines were on hand to guide the students through several trade-based activities set over two days to accommodate the large number of budding tradies.
Leanne Ryder, Manager Human Resources and Training, Glencore's North Queensland Copper Assets Australia said skilled trades played a key role in the day-to-day operations of its assets and help keep things running smoothly.
"It's often forgotten in the focus on technology that skilled tradespeople still require expert hand skills," Ms Ryder said.
"These workshops help students realise how their classroom learning relates to the real world, and what it takes to get into a trade career."
Chris Pocock, Spinifex State College Head of Campus, said many students wanted to remain in their local community once they finished schooling.
"Knowledge of the trade career pathways available here is very encouraging," Mr Pocock said.
"It also helps students structure their studies in years 11 and 12 to put them in the best position to apply for apprenticeships."
The QMEA is a partnership between the Queensland Resources Council and the Queensland Government under its Gateway to Industry Schools program. It has 60 schools throughout Queensland.
