The students took part in science and engineering exercises under the wing of mentors from Glencore’s Mount Isa Mines at Spinifex State College in Mount Isa and Kirwan State High School in Townsville.
The STEM 4 School Kids (S4SK) program is aimed at high-achieving year 10 students interested in pursuing a professional career in engineering or science.
During the two one-day events, students from Spinifex State College, Good Shepherd Catholic School, Cloncurry P-12 school and Kirwan State High school worked in groups to complete a series of challenges and activities around the different disciplines of science and engineering related professions in the resources sector.
Industry professionals spoke to students about their own careers and helped them complete the experimental stages of the activity.
Meanwhile, year 10 students who showed an aptitude for trade or operator roles took part in Toolkit days at Mount Isa, and Townsville.
This included a visit to Glencore’s Copper refinery for Kirwan High School students who heard from guest speakers from Hastings Deering. They addressed the students on the different trades on offer in the resources sector, and their personal career journeys.
The aim of the Toolkit day is to engage students with industry professionals and make them aware of job opportunities in the resources sector, while receiving an understanding of life as a tradie.
QMEA is the education and skills arm of the Queensland Resources Council and is tasked with providing pathways for students into the resources sector. It is a partnership between the resources sector and government through the Gateway to Industry Schools Program.
