The Starries were expected to win after their 13 lined up against the 12 men of Wanderers but the Devils pushed them all the way.
Indeed Wanderers were quickest out of the blocks and raced into a 20-6 with four of the first five tries in the first 20 minutes of a lively game.
But Black Stars hit back with three tries of their own to claim a narrow half time two point lead by 22 points to 20.
The second half started off like the first with Wanderers hot to trot and they reclaimed the lead with a try on 49 minutes.
The sides swapped scores leaving matters at 30-26 to the Starries.
When Wanderers scored two more tries in quick succession it seemed as if they could pull off an unlikely victory at 36-30.
But with six minutes to go they coughed up the ball on their own line and it proved costly as Starries levelled the score.
There was heartbreak for the Devils who conceded a try with a minute to go to give victory to the Black Stars 42-36.
In the other game undermanned home side Cloncurry went down 74-10 to Brothers.
