Principal Tonia Smerdon has worked at Normanton State School for over 20 years and was nominated by P&C committee and regional director for the "extraordinary" support she gives to students.
"It is an honour and very pleasing to know that our school and I have been recognised for the work that we have been doing," Ms Smerdon said.
Ms Smerdon said the school aimed to support the welfare, emotional, social and physical needs of students and stressed the importance of getting that right before expecting they will succeed academically.
"It's about personalising learning and looking at every individual student and their individual needs and making sure we are getting it right fulfilling those needs," she said.
Ms Smerdon said the school worked with a number of organisations to provide the best resources to students.
"We work with different practitioners, including medical or health workers. I believe this is a really important part of our school ensuring the individuals needs are met by accessing these resources," she said.
"We've had definite improvements with our academic results over a number of years and certainly the things we are able to offer our students support their learning."
Ms Smerdon said the award confirmed the process benefited students and the community.
"We have a very strong team of teachers and teacher aids that work within the school," she said.
"We also have a strong inter-agency network which I work very closely with them across a number of committees and areas within the community and they support our school very well.
"The biggest thing is that we are going to keep doing what we do to improve learning outcomes for all students."
Ms Smerdon is now in the running to be a state finalist which will be announced on July 29.
