Cyclone Esther has been downgraded but a severe weather warning for damaging wind and rain remains in place for the Carpentaria and Barkly regions of the Northern Territory.

At 3:30am Tuesday Ex-Tropical Cyclone Esther was located about 90 kilometres south of Borroloola, moving west at 11 kilometres per hour. The system is expected to continue moving west through the Carpentaria District over the next 24 hours. Squally thunderstorms and heavy rainfall are likely, particularly close to the system centre.
Damaging winds , averaging 50-60 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are expected over the eastern Carpentaria District and northeast Barkly District this morning, extending westwards into the western Carpentaria District and across the northern Barkly District this afternoon and evening. The strongest winds are likely to be associated with squally showers and thunderstorms.
Heavy rain which may lead to flash flooding is occurring over the eastern Carpentaria and northeast Barkly Districts this morning, and is expected to extend into the western Carpentaria and across the northern Barkly District this afternoon and evening. The heaviest rainfalls are likely to be associated with squally showers and thunderstorms.
Locations which may be affected include Elliott, Borroloola, Larrimah, Daly Waters, McArthur River, Wollogorang, Renner Springs, Mallapunyah, Cresswell Downs, Brunette Downs and Minyerri.
Since 9am on Monday, Mornington Island has received 172.2mm, McArthur River Mine has recorded 151mm, and Borroloola 130.6mm .Burketown has 28.4mm. A wind gust of 102km/h was recorded at Centre Island at 1:30am.
In the Mount Isa forecast region today will be partly cloudy with a slight (30%) chance of a shower, most likely in the late morning and afternoon and the chance of a thunderstorm in the late morning and afternoon.
